October 18, 2010: UIL XC Race for Girls Will Stay at 2 Miles
-- From Mark Dent's Dallas Morning News Blog at 11:54 a.m.
"Just got off the phone with UIL athletic director Cliff Odenwald. The legislative committee decided to keep the cross country race distance for girls at two miles.
"The decision came mainly because of results of a UIL survey. At the 5A and 4A levels, 53 percent supported an increase of distance to 5K and 47 percent wanted to stay at two miles. At 3A and under, the overwhelming majority voted to stay at two miles.
"Odenwald said the UIL will commission another, more in-depth survey in the coming months for the 5A and 4A levels to explore the possibility of an extension for next year. The earliest time at which it will be discussed again would be at the athletic council in June. "
[As an aside, SPC has gone to a 5K for the girls starting this season.]

Do you have an iPhone?  Have you tried the Wind Meter APP yet?  Unbelievably, there's a very good application to measure wind, and you can find it here: www.windapp.com.  Here's a testimonial:  As a division 1 track coach and operator of LetsRun.com, I was stunned to learn that the iphone could measure wind speed. This app works as advertised and is a lot of fun to take to a track meet. Obviously, you can't use it for official wind readings for record purposes but it's fun to prior to a race to ask yourself, "I wonder if these times will count. How strong is that wind?" And then pull out the iphone and see. It matches up really well with a real track and field wind meter.  I'd like to add the following if you use it on your site. At 99 cents, it's a no-brainer. Definitely worth it.
